In a world where access to natural health products (NHPs) is increasingly threatened by government intervention, one organization is on the front lines of the fight to preserve our right to choose natural alternatives for our well-being. Since 2008, the Natural Health Products Protection Association (NHPPA) has tirelessly campaigned against any threat to NHPs, defending freedom of access to these essential products.
The Turning Point: Bill C-51
In 2008, a pivotal moment came with the introduction of Bill C-51, legislation that posed a significant risk to the availability of natural health products (NHPs). While other trade organizations were resigned to simply amending the bill, the NHPPA took a bold stand to stop its progress altogether. Many doubted the feasibility of stopping Bill C-51, but the NHPPA’s unwavering determination and strategic efforts paid off. The NHPPA-led movement was able to effectively stop Bill C-51, ensuring that the rights of consumers and natural health product advocates were protected.
In Defense of Natural Health Products
NHPPA’s unwavering commitment to defending NHPs is unprecedented. Despite challenges and skepticism within the industry, this organization has consistently demonstrated that with dedicated advocacy and unified action, meaningful change can be achieved. The victories achieved through NHPPA’s campaigns not only ensure the availability of NHPs, but also preserve the fundamental rights of individuals to make informed choices about their health and well-being.
Why is this private member's bill so important?
In the fall of 2023, Shawn Buckley introduced a new private member’s bill, C-368, to repeal sections 500 to 504 of the Budget Implementation Act, 2023, No. 1 (formerly Bill C-47). These sections, part of the annual budget bill, redefine natural health products and subject the entire industry to stricter regulations, including heavy fines of up to $5,000,000 per day, by placing them in the same category as chemical drugs.
We are pleased to announce that our private member’s bill, Bill C-368, has successfully passed second reading after receiving a majority of votes in the House of Commons on May 29, 2024! It is important to note that very few bills make it past second reading. This achievement is even more significant than you might imagine, and it is entirely due to the commitment of individual Canadians.
The Natural Health Product Protection Association (NHPPA) Proactive Commitment
As the healthcare landscape changes, NHPPA is prepared to address any potential threats to NHPs by remaining proactive and using our knowledge and advocacy. This organization is well equipped to protect the interests of consumers and maintain the integrity of the natural health product sector. Through regular campaigns such as weekly letters and postcard initiatives to MPs, petition signings, and more, NHPPA instills confidence in NHP supporters, ensuring their concerns are addressed and their rights are preserved.
